Below, you will find assignments and weekly schedules describing what tasks you should be completing during the school closure. None of these assignments are graded, but they will help you maintain your current skills. Some of the content on PowerPoints is 'new', but all of this content will be reviewed once we return to class. If you are unable to access these assignments and activities during the closure, you will have a chance to access the material upon our return. While none of these activities are graded, you may submit them to me via email (picture, scanned assignment, etc.) or to Turnitin.com and I will offer you feedback. If you have any questions, please email me and we will figure this out together!
Week of March 30-April 3:
Monday, March 30, 2020: WWII CrashCourse Video & Worksheet
As an intro to WWII, please watch the CrashCourse Video (linked to the right) and answer the questions on your worksheet as you watch. Please tape the worksheet into your journals with a table of contents entry. This is a fantastic overview of the main points of WWII. We will cover all of this content when we return to class. |

Tuesday & Wednesday, March 31-April 1, 2020: WWII Map of Europe & North Africa
One thing that is important for your overall understanding of WWII is to have a clear geographical frame of reference for various events. This activity is designed to give you that frame of reference for the European Theater. WWII was fought mostly in Europe & North Africa and the Pacific, with these regions being called 'theaters'. The European Theater includes all of Europe, but also North Africa. Follow the directions in the PowerPoint to label your map of the European Theater and to shade it appropriate colors for various alliances during the war. The PowerPoint will also direct you to various maps in the textbook that will help you create your map. |

Thursday & Friday, April 2-3, 2020: Hitler's Act of Aggression PowerPoint Notes
Another important thing to understand about the beginnings of WWII is that Hitler made many moves before the war officially started that either broke the Treaty of Versailles or were clear steps to war. There are 9 major steps that Hitler did that led to war and to help you remember them and the order of those events, use the following mnemonic device: Rabidly Racist Adolf Suddenly Made Countries Need Powerful Weapons. Each word of that device starts with the same letter as the event that led to war. Remember the device to help you remember the order! We will go over this when we return to class, but to get a head start, take notes in your journals on Hitler's Acts of Aggression. |

Week of March 23-27:
Monday, March 23, 2020: Hitler's Rise to Power PowerPoint Notes
The day before we left for the closure, we had begun to cover Hitler's Rise to Power. We had gotten halfway through the material covered in the PowerPoint. Please continue taking notes on the PowerPoint from where we left off (the election of 1932). We will finish covering this when we return, but your should complete the notes while the information is fresh in your minds. |
|
Tuesday & Wednesday, March 24-25, 2020: Hitler Source Readings & Notes
Use the provided readings (linked on the right) to help you take notes on Hitler's rise to power in Germany. As you read and take notes, review what we covered about the economic crisis in the Weimar Republic and how Hitler and the Nazi party capitalized on people's fears to manipulate their emotions and take power in Germany. Bullet point notes are fine for the worksheet, but you should aim for somewhere between 6-10 bullet points of solid information per reading. Also, remember to take notes that cover the whole reading, not just the beginning. :) |

Thursday, March 26, 2020: Mussolini, Hitler, & Hirohito Excerpts & Review
Use the excerpts from these three fascists leaders to help you review both the main principles of Fascism and the rise to power of dictator's and fascist states during the interwar years. We covered both Mussolini and Hitler in class, but Hirohito was also a pivotal leader during the buildup to WWII and the eventual ally of Hitler and Mussolini to create the Axis Alliance. Each of the readings are excerpts from speeches of the three fascist leaders. Use the readings to help you answer the questions on the reading worksheet and to guide your review of the interwar years. |
|
Friday, March 27, 2020: Dictators Review
As we conclude the first part of Unit 2, use the Dictators Review worksheet to help you compare and contrast Stalin, Mussolini, & Hitler. Sort the various terms into the columns for each of the leaders. The terms can be used more than once! for instance, fascism would apply to both Hitler & Mussolini, so put the term in both columns. After you have sorted the terms, make sure you answer the questions at the bottom. This activity is intended to help you review what we have learned so far and to use that information to make evaluations of historical topics. |
