Below, you will find assignments and weekly schedules describing what tasks you should be completing during the school closure. None of these assignments are graded, but they will help you maintain your current skills. Some of the content on PowerPoints is 'new', but all of this content will be reviewed once we return to class. If you are unable to access these assignments and activities during the closure, you will have a chance to access the material upon our return. While none of these activities are graded, you may submit them to me via email (picture, scanned assignment, etc.) or to Turnitin.com and I will offer you feedback. If you have any questions, please email me and we will figure this out together!
Week of March 30-April 3:
Monday & Tuesday, March 30-31, 2020: Berlin Olympics PowerPoint Notes
Please take a look through the PowerPoint linked to the right and take notes on a separate sheet of paper or your journals. We will go over over this content when we return to class. As we eventually will come back to class, we will pick up with Unit 3: Sports as a political and social stage. We will look at various moments in sports history where sporting events were used by governments, athletes, organizations, or fans to make a stand on a social or political issue in some way. A major theme we will see are that the Olympics, global competition, were commonly used to take these stands. To begin our look into Major Olympic Moments, we will start with perhaps the most famous Olympics, the Berlin 1936 Olympics, aka the Nazi Olympics. Hitler used the Olympics as a spectacle to show the power and prestige of Germany and the Nazi Party. He wielded the 1936 Olympics as a political weapon to prove to the world that Germany was back and better than ever under his leadership. In these political aims, he also had social goals in an attempt to prove that the German Aryan race was superior physically to all other groups. Hitler attempted to use the 1936 Olympics to demonstrate that one race was superior to others and limited the participation of Jews and other minorities. This of course also gives us one of the best sports stories in sports history, Jesse Owens and his four gold medals and some new world records at the Berlin Olympics. |

Wednesday & Thursday, April 1-2, 2020: Six Minutes in Berlin Article & Notes
Besides Jesse Owens, another great story that came out of the 1936 Olympics that helped destroy Hitler's political and social aims of the Berlin games was the University of Washington rowing team's victory over the German team in what is called "the greatest race you've never heard of". Some of you may know this story as it was featured in the book the "Boys in the Boat". Read the article "Six Minutes in Berlin" and complete the notes worksheet. |

Friday, April 3, 2020: "Boys of '36" PBS Documentary or "Race" Movie
Have a fun day watching one of the films listed. Remember that these are optional activities and there are no video notes for these films. Both of them give visual details for one of the major stories that came out of the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. If you would like to watch "Boys of '36", the only place it is available on the internet is through Amazon Prime. Unfortunately it was removed from YouTube recently. Additionally, the movie Race is not streaming anywhere for free. If you cannot access either of these videos, it is OK because this is not a graded assignment. The content from these videos is accessible in the assignments above.
